THE BEST DURATION OF LOW INTENSITY PULSED ULTRASOUND FOR ACCELERATING FRACTURED-RADIAL BONE REPAIR
Authors
Abstract:
We have already shown that low intensity pulsed ultrasonic treatment increases rabbit radial fracture healing. The present experiment was undertaken to find out the best duration for treatment. A complete transverse fracture was made in the right radial bones of21 adult male rabbits by a Stanley knife. The animals were divided into 4 groups: group 1, control groups 2, 3, and 4, experimental groups, which received ultrasound (0.5 W /cm2, 1MHz, 2 msec on-8 msec off) for durations of 5,10, and 15 min/day, respectively, from the day after surgery until complete fusion was observed. Radiological studies indicated that mean duration of healing was longer and rate of healing was lower in the control compared with those of the experimental groups (p<0.05). However, group 3 showed the least mean healing duration and group 2 and 3 showed the highest healing rate. Our results revealed no deleterious effects of ultrasound on treated and untreated ipsilateral and contralateral bones during the experiment or one month after complete fusion of the bones, at which time ultrasound treatment was terminated.

In order to study the effect of ultrasound (US) on bone healing, a complete transverse fracture was made in the right radius of adult male rabbits by a cutter. 52 rabbits were used: group I. control (n= 17): group 2. test (n:=: 15): group 3, intact (n= I) and group 4 (n= 12) who were examined only for evaluation of the cutter effects in detail. 7 animals were operated with a Gigli saw. The ...
full textLow Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound Accelerates Bone -tendon Junction Repair
INTRODUCTION: Many trauma surgeries and reconstructive surgeries involve re-establishment of a bone-tendon (B-T) junction, such as repair of patella fractures. In case of comminuted patella fractures, partial patellectomy has become a option of surgical repair . But direct B-T junction repair is slow due to poor regenerative capability of its junctional fibrocartilage zone. Biophysical interven...

full textLow-intensity pulsed ultrasound for bone healing: an overview.
Low-intensity ultrasound is a biophysical form of intervention in the fracture-repair process, which through several mechanisms accelerates healing of fresh fractures and enhances callus formation in delayed unions and nonunions. The goal of this review is to present the current knowledge obtained from basic science and animal studies, as well as existing evidence from clinical trials and case ...

The application of ultrasound energy at much lower levels than is the current clinical norm is starting to gain ground as a therapeutic possibility. Clearly the applied energy is the same, it is the ‘dose’ which is different – most importantly, the intensity (W cm) – which is MUCH lower – typically 2 or 3 times lower than the lowest setting on most regular clinical machines, with the most commo...
